The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management is a degree-level, work-based qualification for experienced site managers overseeing large or complex projects. This qualification formally assesses and verifies an individual’s existing competence in a live construction environment, with the primary benefit of enabling them to apply for the prestigious CSCS Black Manager’s Card.
Course Summary
This NVQ is a competence-based qualification, meaning there are no classroom sessions or written exams. Instead, delegates build a portfolio of evidence from their actual work on-site.
Duration
There is no fixed timescale; completion depends entirely on the delegate’s motivation, experience, and speed in gathering evidence. It can be completed in as little as 6 months for highly experienced candidates, but access to assessor support often lasts up to 24 months.
Assessment
Assessment is conducted remotely and on-site by a qualified assessor. Methods include:
- Compiling a portfolio of workplace evidence (e.g., risk assessments, method statements, meeting minutes, site photos/videos).
- Professional discussions with the assessor (often via phone or video calls) to explain how tasks are managed.
- Witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues.
Certification
Upon successful completion and verification, candidates receive aLevel 6 NVQ Diploma. This qualification does not expire.
Content
The diploma covers all aspects of operational site management, with mandatory and optional units across various pathways (e.g., Building and Civil Engineering, Residential Development, Demolition). Key areas include:
- Establishing and maintaining health, safety, and welfare systems.
- Evaluating, selecting, and confirming work methods and resources.
- Planning site setup and controlling environmental factors and sustainability.
- Monitoring project activities, quality standards, programmes, quantities, and costs.
- Managing communication systems and organizational procedures.
- Managing personal development and (optionally) temporary works.
Next Available Dates
St. Asaph / Customer Premises This qualification is specifically designed for experienced site managers, project managers, and senior supervisors who are already working in a decision-making role and overseeing construction projects. It is not suitable for entry-level workers.
The primary benefit is career progression and professional recognition. The Level 6 NVQ is equivalent to a full bachelor's degree and is the required qualification to apply for the CSCS Black Manager's Card. It also provides a pathway to achieving Chartered status with professional bodies like the CIOB.
Yes. While the NVQ is the core requirement, you must also pass the separate CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touchscreen test for managers and professionals within two years of applying for your Black Card.
